CONSERVATION OF LION
The Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is the sole home of the Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica), and therefore considered one of the most important protected areas in Asia. A major threat to the estimated 359 wild Asiatic Lions found living in the Gir Forest is ‘open wells’. There is an urgent need to build parapet walls around the open wells to prevent the lions and other wildlife from falling in.
TCL in partnership with the Gujarat State Forest Dept, has completed the job of building parapet walls around 1,002 such wells in the Gir Forest areas. A new project to parapet an additional 500 wells is also on the anvil.
